He blamed stress caused by his case for contributing to her death as well as the health problems of his 73-year-old father, who he said has suffered three heart attacks.

At least one brother, Elkin Jaramillo, 37, of Downingtown, agreed.

"Throughout these different proceedings, old wounds keep getting opened up again," he said.

Jaramillo was 24 when he was arrested.

He testified to Honeyman that he sold the 0.35 grams of cocaine to what turned out to be undercover narcotics agents in March 1989 because it was a "macho thing" to do.

While he admitted using cocaine and marijuana until his arrest six months later, Jaramillo said he never sold drugs again despite repeated requests from the friend who had originally set him up.

He pleaded guilty before Common Pleas Judge Lawrence Wood and was sentenced to five years probation and 200 hours of community service.

Jaramillo completed both without any violations.

Jaramillo did not know he was not a U.S.

citizen until his father showed him a copy of his green card in 1996, at which point he applied for citizenship.

Later he received a letter from the federal government instructing him to appear in person at the immigration office in Philadelphia.
