US finalizes CAFE mileage standards for trucks, SUVs

...The major difference in the final rule is that large SUVs - such as the Hummer, produced as a joint venture between GM and AM General - will be covered.

The final rule also eliminates a proposal to create six categories of light trucks based on size that critics said would have led to automakers gaming the system.Instead, the rule offers continuous fuel-economy standards based on the vehicle's footprint. The new CAFE standard leaves the marketplace free to decide what kinds of vehicles should be produced, rather than dictating a mix of vehicles to automakers, the government said in its final rule. The government said the new rule also minimizes the adverse safety impact that resulted from loopholes in current rules, such as giving automakers incentives to design passenger cars to be classified as light trucks, which can increase rollover risks. The final rule doesn't increase the fuel-economy standard beyond what was proposed in August, even though higher projected fuel costs would make tougher standards economical. The Transportation Department estimated that the cost of complying with the rule would be $6.7 billion and the benefits would be $8.1 billion.

For the 2011 model year, it would take 4.4...

Dana Reeve's last project airs on PBS

... "She was very hopeful at that point that she would survive," director Muffie Meyer recalled.

"She was buying Christmas presents for her son that day, and really had a tremendous amount of energy.

She seemed wonderful, and very, very grounded and strong." In her introduction to the first segment of "The New Medicine," Reeve tells viewers: "Your emotional state has a tremendous amount to do with sickness, health and well-being.

For years, my husband and I lived on - and because of - hope.

Hope continues to give me the mental strength to carry on." The project was the last she is known to have completed before her March 6 death, and it was a fitting one: "The New Medicine," which debuts tonight on KCET/28, looks at how mainstream doctors are embracing treatment of the whole patient - not just symptoms of a disease.

Reeve's TV appearance after her death unintentionally underscores one of the documentary's central points: Holistic medicine is a tool for fighting illness, not a cure-all.

"Part of the challenge is, we get patients all the time that are really looking for a magic cure," said Dr.

Tracy Gaudet, an obstetrician-gynecologist who heads the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine in Durham, N.C.

"We're not in the business of magic cures; we're in the business of good medicine." The Duke center uses any available technique - from alternative to mainstream - that might improve a patien...

Letter: Smoking area changed at local hospital

...Since smoking is known to cause disease, a ban on smoking near public entrances has more to do with enforcing common courtesy than restricting freedom of choice.

That’s why we are advocating for a policy of mutual respect, where smokers aren’t persecuted, but where non-smokers aren’t overly exposed to smoke.

Working together, we can solve 90 percent of the problem.

As a courtesy to non-smokers, we have now removed cigarette butt receptacles from the entrances of our hospital.

As a courtesy to our smokers, we now have an outside designated smoking area with seating for your convenience. It’s important to remember that if you’re a smoker and have trouble quitting, please talk to your doctor.

With the help of nicotine replacement products or a prescription drug that eases cravings, a support group, and your physician, you should be able to overcome the addictive pull of nicotine.

Also, we have many smoking cessation classes that can help.
