Big SUVs Face New Fuel-Economy Rules... Add this site to your "Favorites" to find your way back easily next time. The nation's largest SUVs and vans will have to meet government fuel-economy rules for the first time under a new rule announced Wednesday. If the new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rules were in effect now, it would cover a quarter million SUVs - including the Hummer H2 - that had never been covered by fuel-economy rules. All other SUVs, pickups and minivans will be required to get improved mileage - some even better than the 27.5 mpg required for 2006 cars. The new average fuel economy for these trucks will be 24 miles per gallon - up from the current 21.6 mpg. The new rules will take effect in 2011. The Hummer H2, which currently doesn't have to meet fuel-economy standards, would have to get 22.3 mpg in 2011, up from the 10 mpg it now gets. General Motors spokeswoman Sherrie Childers Arb says GM should still be able to sell the H2 even if it can't achieve the new fuel-economy numbers. The NHTSA rules allow a company's more fuel-efficient vehicles to offset those that use more fuel. Ford spokesman Ed Lewis said the rules "pose significant challenges" but said the company's hybrid and car-based SUVs should help it improve its trucks' mpg.
