Pauline Canterberry's life used to revolve around mining, and it still does today, just in a different sense.

A woman well past retirement age, Canterberry lives in Sylvester, W.Va., not far from Kayford Mountain.

Her smile comes easily during most conversations, but when coal is the topic at hand, she grows serious.

And how can she not?

Canterberry lost two of the most important men in her life to mining - her father and her husband.

Now, the air and water where she lives have become so polluted from coal dust and waste, she's fighting for her own survival.

In the past few years, she has found herself up against the Massey Coal Company and West Virginia's Division of Environmental Protection.

"We're old.

We should be enjoying life," said Mary Miller, a close friend and neighbor of Canterberry.

Jim Brady Frustrated by Gun Control Progress

..."You know, I was sort of prepared because I'd been through a trauma with Jim," she said.

"I think I was more able to just look at it day by day rather than worrying about what was going to happen in the future." That undaunted spirit has served them well, especially in their high-profile battle for gun control.

They are frustrated that in the 13 years since the Brady Bill was signed, gun control efforts have largely stalled, and they single out the party they once proudly served.

"The Republican Party today is not what the Republican Party was 20 years ago," Sarah Brady said.

"It's moved so far to the right.

We were proud of politicians 10 years ago and 12 years ago who stood up and did the right thing.

Today, I don't think they're doing the right thing.

They're looking out for themselves." The fight helps keep their thoughts on the future, but of course anniversaries have a way of forcing the past back into focus.

Jim Brady remembers that he wasn't even supposed to be with Reagan that day.

& FREMONT, Calif.-(BUSINESS WIRE)-March 30, 2006 - Amgen (Nasdaq: AMGN) and Abgenix, Inc.

(Nasdaq: ABGX) today announced that Amgen has completed the Biologic License Application (BLA) submission with the U.S.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for panitumumab.

The potential indication is for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer in patients who have failed prior chemotherapy, including oxaliplatin and/or irinotecan containing regimens.

The rolling BLA submission was initiated in December 2005.

"The pivotal Phase 3 study of panitumumab not only met the primary endpoint of improving progression-free survival in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, but the results surpassed our expectations based on preset measurement criteria in the protocol," said Willard Dere, M.D., chief medical officer and senior vice president of Global Development at Amgen.

"Completing the BLA brings us one step closer to realizing our goal of making panitumumab accessible to patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who have failed available treatment options." Amgen and Abgenix previously announced that data from a randomized Phase 3 trial involving 463 patients showed that those who received panitumumab every two weeks showed a 46 percent decrease in t...
