Softball IPFW junior catcher Kacie Stone (Newburgh) was named Division I independent player of the week and freshman infielder Kayla Vargo (Westville) was named independent newcomer of the week.

Stone hit .833 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI in four games.

Vargo hit .500 with a winning home run, two doubles and six RBI.

Track and field Alabama sophomore Brandon Schneider (Northrop) won the pole vault at the Alabama Relays with a personal-best 16 feet, 3/4 inches.

Saint Francis sophomore Adam Longsworth (Elmhurst) placed 14th in the shot put at the NAIA indoor championships with a season-best throw of 50 feet, 9 1/2 inches.

Saint Francis sophomore Alexandra Hornstein (Indianapolis) qualified in the 800-meter run and posted a personal record of 2:22.23 in the preliminaries but did not advance to the finals.

On Campus focuses on local college athletics as well as former area high school athletes competing at colleges across the country.

... Born Nov.

8, 1925, in Painesville, she was a lifetime resident of Mentor.

She graduated from Bowling Green University in 1947, with a degree in mathematics.

She was an avid bridge player and a member of Mentor Headlands Tuesday Night Bridge Club.

She enjoyed shopping, reading, dining out with friends and spending time with her family.

Mrs.

Childs was retired from Fasson Corp., where she was lab technician for more than 20 years.

Survivors are her daughter, Corinne "Connie" (Les) Reiter of St.

Louis, Mo.; sons, Richard (Sue) Childs of Mentor and Jack Childs of Boardman; grandchildren, Leah, Kristen, Karen, Steven, Michael, Robbie, and Sarah; and sisters, Justine Longbons of Mentor and Marjorie (Bill) VanDeusen of Toledo.

Her husband, Robert; and parents, Justin and Jennie Jayne, are deceased.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.

The family suggests contributions be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 5786 Heisley Road, Mentor 44060.

Producers of the TV show are investigating after being told that actors and crew could have been put at risk by filming while buildings there were being demolished.

Asbestos, which can cause heart, lung and breathing problems - and the cancer mesothelioma - was used in building the original blocks on the estate in Wallington in the 1960s.

Some residents fear the knocking down of homes may be putting them in danger of being poisoned.

And there is concern that crew and cast members of the police show could have been affected, as they regularly film on the estate.
