...And while it's important to put those pink ribbons on our minivans and wear our yellow "Live Strong" bracelets, it's just not enough.

We can walk a million miles for a cure, but it's not enough.

We have to take our own lives into our own hands.

We have to get checked early.

We have to not miss warning signs.

We have to stop and take the time to listen to our bodies.

We have to ask doctors to explain things to us until we understand - even if that means spending an hour explaining the same thing.

And if we forget once we leave the office, we call again.

Being "relentless for a cure" also means being relentless in our own lives to try and prevent cancer or fight it with all we have if we get it.We have to fight Congress to protect our health rights and cover expenses like reconstructive breast surgery after cancer.

And we need to eliminate limits on when insurance will cover mammograms, because waiting until you're 40 might be too late.

Just like the great teacher she is, Laura Guthrie is teaching us all a lesson in courage.

She says with her southern twang, "I have cancer, but cancer doesn't have me.

I won't give up without a fight." Email this story Subscribe Please send comments to or contact us at 301...
