Unfiltered: A truly indie film that doesn’t pander with ...... Wrong. Nick, played with exquisite charm and aplomb by Aaron Eckhart, is actually the hero of Thank You for Smoking, a protagonist who is the face of Big Tobacco and the ultimate spinmeister—the kind of guy who could disprove gravity if it were in his contract. Nick is not very well liked by the general public. And his ex-wife (Kim Dickens) doesn’t like him. Oh, and the government, in the form of the Birkenstock-wearing Sen. Ortolan Finistirre from Vermont (William H. Macy) really doesn’t like him. But the truth is that he’s a very likeable guy. His 12-year-old son Joey (Cameron Bright) adores him, as do his friends, his counterparts in the world of alcohol (Maria Bello) and firearms (David Koechner, one of the best character actors working today). Hell, he’s charmed the pants off (literally) of the reporter (Katie Holmes) doing an investigative piece on him. He’s the golden boy of a despised industry, and he’s caught the eye of the man in charge (Robert Duvall), who’s grooming him for great things. Writer/director Jason Reitman (son of comic director Ivan) has adapted Christopher Buckley’s novel into a terrifically clever film that puffs right along, blowing smoke in the face of everyone in its path. Really, the crux of the picture is whether or not Nick can be a good person while promoting cigarettes.
